Dragon Medical One | On Premise Desktop Dictation | |
What is it? | Dragon Medical One is a cloud based speech recognition software product. | Most non-cloud - on premise desktop dictation software is installed locally on an individual PC or server where all speech processing is done on-premise. |
How much does it cost? | Software as a Service (SaaS) paid monthly. Costs are $99 per month* (may save for longer terms) | Non-cloud speech recognition software generally comes with a one-time fee and no monthly or yearly fees are associated. Upgrades are generally not included increasing acquisition and maintenance time and costs later. |
Which is better? | Uses AI as part of its speech recognition backbone. The system is upgraded multiple times per year and continues to evolve. Accuracy compared to previous editions is superior and snappier. You can go through several notes with 100% accuracy. Smooth sailing! | Previous, non-cloud versions of Dragon Medical were based on the NaturallySpeaking engine. Accuracy was very good and will impress all but took a toll on your computer, especially if not high-powered. Based on user comments, older editions are a bit slower and less accurate than Dragon Medical One. Differences are very small and maybe within the 1-2 percentile, so barely noticeable. However, 1-2 percent can be noticeable in the long run. Take an example of 1000 dictated words (or more) per day with a 2 percent extra error rate is 20 errors. Even 1% is 10 extra errors daily. By the end of the week, the accumulation may be as many as 100 errors or more. If each error takes 15+ seconds to correct, you've lost 25-30 minutes per week. If you dictate 2000 words per day, you have lost an hour per week or more. This also does not count for your loss of time on a disrupted train of thought. |
Are product updates free? | Automatically updated in the cloud. So long as you are subscribed, there are no upgrade costs. As the platform is upgraded, you are automatically using the latest software available. | Updates are generally available, however, this usually requires manual installation, planning and backup. You are advised of important updates. |
What about major version upgrades? | Major upgrades are always available in the cloud and worry free. If there is a major engine improvement, there are no costs associated as it is included with your monthly service. Further, you never have to worry about backing up your voice profile. | Major upgrades for desktop dictation on premise always comes with a cost. Previous major version upgrades of Dragon Medical would generally cost $599 or more per license. Upgrades were few and far between usually available every 2 - 4 years waiting years for advancements. These upgrades also required backup, planning and other maintenance. |
How many computers may I install on? | With the cloud, there are no device limits. You may have DMO installed in your office computers, in your exam rooms, in multiple offices, and at home with no additional costs. | Previous versions of Dragon have device and activation limitations. At current, as an example, a Dragon Professional allows installation on 2 computers. Previous Dragon Medical allowed activation on 3 computers plus 1 more activation for a final backup. Should you change computers and run out of activations, a special request for an increase in activations ensued. Your account will then be reviewed and you are either granted or rejected more activations. This was a liberal policy and is simply checked to ensure piracy is not an issue which simply equals downtime. |
Multi-Computer use | Everything is stored in the cloud and this process is truly effortless. If you add a word or phrase on one computer, this added vocabulary is available on all computers. No additional work is needed for backing up user profiles or ensuring intra-network connectivity across lan zones. This is one of the strongest points of using a cloud-based service. Your tool is available everywhere as long as you have an internet connection. | With previous Dragon editions, there were/are methods for sharing vocabulary from one machine to the next. You may import and export custom words and phrases. If you use many machines, the process may be tedious and you should use the next method. The next method using "Roaming Profiles" requires you to designate a computer to be the "master". All other computers will synchronize with this "master" computer (only if on the same network). If you use a separate network momentarily, your sync will resume when online with the network with the "master" computer. |
